More than 130 roles, thousands of applicants, and a digital series offering an inside look at the casting process

Casting has officially begun for the feature film “Stoichkov – Against All Odds”, one of the most ambitious Bulgarian film productions in recent years. The project will bring together a large ensemble cast, featuring more than 130 speaking roles—lead, supporting, and featured—as well as approximately 5,000 people.The casting process is primarily focused on male candidates, welcoming both professional actors and newcomers. The production is seeking authentic faces between the ages of 18 and 55 with strong screen presence. Football and athletic experience will be a significant advantage for certain roles. Applications are free of charge, and the selection process is highly targeted, with specific profiles being sought for the film. The project will also conduct an international casting process, including auditions in Spain.
Running alongside the casting process is the launch of the digital series “Stoichkov – Against All Odds: The Selection”, which will provide exclusive access to the search for the film’s cast. The series will feature behind-the-scenes footage, meetings with applicants, key creative decisions, and memorable moments from this large-scale undertaking. It will be released across the film’s digital platforms.
“Stoichkov – Against All Odds” aims to assemble a strong, authentic, and carefully selected cast capable of bringing one of Bulgaria’s most iconic stories to life. The film will trace the journey of the legendary Number Eight—from his early years in Bulgaria to the pinnacle of world football. The project is being developed with the ambition of becoming a landmark cinematic event for Bulgarian audiences while also earning recognition on the international stage.
The film is directed by Martin Makariev, with Alexander Sano and Vladimir Pamukov serving as part of the creative team. The screenplay is written by Georgi Angelov.The project is backed by Winbet as its General Partner, supporting the creation of Bulgarian cinema with meaningful cultural and social impact. Additional partners include A1, Shumensko, Coca-Cola, Black Sea Gold, and Sport Depot.
A key international role in the development and distribution of the project is played by Cloud9 Studios, a U.S.-based company with extensive experience in developing and positioning high-quality productions with global commercial potential.
